Countering Misinformation: The Truth About the Bibas Family and Hamas’s Atrocities

In recent days, an article published by Mondoweiss titled “There is no evidence Hamas killed members of the Bibas family. Israel is using their death to manufacture consent for genocide” has made rounds online, pushing a dangerous and deceptive narrative. This article is not only misleading but blatantly distorts the truth in an effort to deflect blame from Hamas’s well-documented atrocities.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an unprecedented and brutal attack on Israeli civilians, infiltrating towns and kibbutzim, massacring over 1,200 people, and kidnapping more than 250 hostages. Among the abducted were Shiri Bibas, her husband Yarden Bibas, and their two young sons—four-year-old Ariel and nine-month-old Kfir. The chilling images of the Bibas family being forcefully taken by Hamas operatives into Gaza became one of the most haunting symbols of that day’s atrocities.

For weeks, Hamas refused to provide clear information regarding the hostages’ fate. Then, in late November 2023, Hamas claimed that an Israeli airstrike had killed Shiri and her two sons. However, no independent verification supported this claim, and Hamas failed to produce any tangible evidence—no bodies, no footage, no proof.

The true horror was revealed months later. On February 21, 2025, after the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) recovered hostages' bodies, it was confirmed that Hamas had brutally murdered Ariel and Kfir Bibas with their bare hands. IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated:

“Ariel and Kfir were not killed in an airstrike—they were murdered by terrorists in cold blood. The terrorists did not shoot the two young boys; they killed them with their bare hands.”

These findings were corroborated by forensic teams, further debunking Hamas’s earlier claims.

Debunking Mondoweiss’s False Narrative

Mondoweiss’s article attempts to cast doubt on Hamas’s role in the Bibas family’s deaths. Let’s dissect their key claims:

  1. “There is no evidence Hamas killed members of the Bibas family”

    • This is categorically false. Eyewitness accounts, forensic analysis, and intelligence findings have established that Hamas brutally murdered the children while they were in captivity.

    • If Hamas truly had evidence that an Israeli airstrike killed them, why did they never provide bodies or proof? Why did they deliberately delay the release of information?

  2. “Israel is using their death to manufacture consent for genocide”

    • This is an outrageous and baseless accusation. Israel has consistently called for the safe return of all hostages. It was Hamas, not Israel, that kidnapped innocent civilians, used them as human shields, and then executed them in cold blood.

    • If Israel’s goal was to “manufacture consent,” why would they go to such lengths to recover and properly identify the bodies of those killed? The forensic evidence speaks for itself.

  3. “Hamas has no incentive to harm hostages”

    • This claim ignores Hamas’s documented history of torturing and murdering hostages. Numerous testimonies from released hostages have detailed the abuse, starvation, and psychological torment inflicted upon them.

    • Hamas publicly executed hostages, including IDF soldiers and civilians, as part of their psychological warfare tactics.

The Reality of Hamas’s Terror

The Bibas family’s murder is not an isolated incident. Hamas has a long track record of crimes against humanity, including:

  • Using civilians as human shields

  • Hiding military infrastructure in hospitals, schools, and residential areas

  • Murdering hostages instead of negotiating their safe release

  • Executing their own people to maintain control over Gaza

These are not the actions of a legitimate political entity; they are the hallmarks of a terrorist organization.

Why Mondoweiss’s Coverage is Dangerous

Mondoweiss has been widely criticized for its biased reporting, often serving as an echo chamber for anti-Israel propaganda. According to Media Bias/Fact Check, Mondoweiss is “Left Biased and Questionable” due to its consistent lack of objectivity, reliance on poor sources, and promotion of extreme anti-Zionist rhetoric.

By spreading falsehoods about Hamas’s crimes, outlets like Mondoweiss not only distort reality but also enable terrorism. Misinformation fuels division, encourages further violence, and diminishes the credibility of legitimate human rights discussions.

The Importance of Truth and Accountability

The world must not allow Hamas’s atrocities to be whitewashed by biased media outlets. The murder of Ariel and Kfir Bibas is a painful reminder of the brutal nature of Hamas’s actions. As responsible consumers of news, we must challenge propaganda, demand evidence-based reporting, and stand firm against those who seek to rewrite history.

Israel continues to fight for the safe return of all hostages and the security of its citizens. Those who manipulate the truth to protect Hamas should be held accountable for their role in perpetuating lies and justifying terrorism.
